Statement
Painting is
a vibrant place at the juncture of the material and the conceptual.
My paintings are light, space, colour, volume, and rhythm, and how
these play out on the picture plane.
All painting
is about looking, and in my work I try to balance the making of
the painting with the act of looking.
I use line,
colour, shape, and all the traditional concerns and tools of a trained
artist in my work, however, paint handling, knowledge of materials,
and intution are as important to my practice.
I draw on these
elements to recast sensory experiences in a new way. Everyone brings
a body of knowledge to the act of looking; this knowledge can confer
meaning to paintings that may at first seem purely abstract — these
paintings may elicit an immediate emotional response, or even a
vague sense of familiarity.
Even in the
case of recognizable subject matter, painting is not merely a tool
for examining the world; it is an acknowledgement of the many experiences
that occur to us while we live and observe.
The same body
of knowledge that allows us to see a landscape, to interpret the
symbols and moods of representational paintings, also allows us
to experience the emotive reality of an abstract painting. All paintings
attest to the reality and strength of elements of human experience
that are beyond the scope of language to describe, and confirm the
evocative powers of light, space, and colour.
